A Look at CWA Local 4340
Beginnings
The
Communications Workers of America Local 4340 was formed in 1985;
the result of a merger between five Cuyahoga and Lake County locals.
Size
CWA
Local 4340 represents nearly 3000 workers in the public, non-profit
and private sectors.
Composition
Local
4340 members are employed in the telecommunications industry, electric
utilities, manufacturing, public and social service, printing and publishing
and emergency health response.
Geographic Spread
Members
of CWA Local 4340 live and work in Cuyahoga , Lake, Guernsey, Ashtabula
and Geauga counties in Ohio, as well as independent telecommunications
contractors and interconnect companies throughout the Midwest and eastern
seaboard.
Collective Bargaining
Local
4340 bargains contracts for public employees of Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga
and Ashtabula Counties as well as over 75 companies in the telecommunications,
public and printing and publishing sectors.
Union Democracy
The
Communications Workers of America Local 4340 holds bi-monthly general
membership meetings on the third Tuesday of the month. On alternate months, the various sectors meet
regarding concerns specific to their work locations.
The
membership votes on decisions affecting the local.
The President, Executive Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer
of CWA Local 4340 are elected to their positions every three years.
It
is their responsibility to oversee the total operation of the Local. Together they serve as the Executive Board
of the Local. Directors are
appointed to represent the membership by the President.
They are responsible for representing the entire membership. Each director is charged with responsibility
for a segment of the Local as well as serving as advisors or chairpersons
to the various committees of Local 4340.
The Directors are accountable to the officers and serve in an
advisory capacity as the Executive Council.
